The castle’s construction

Santa Bárbara castle was built between the years 1562 and 1580. The plans used were created by Juan Bautista Antonelli and Jorge Palearo el Fratín. Its location on Mount Benacantil gives it an impressive presence. And for good reason – this rocky mass rises 166 metres above sea level.

The actual origin of this defensive building dates back to the 9th century, a period of Muslim reign. It was later given a Christian name by the Crown of Aragón, in 1248. Later, James II ordered its first remodel.

Although new changes and adjustments were made along the way, the most significant reform took place under the reign of Philip II, on the dates mentioned above. Subsequent attacks and aggressions, between the 17th and 19th centuries, resulted in further remodelling.

In 1963, it was transformed into a public, visitable location. The main new addition? The Santa Bárbara Castle double lift. Both cross the mountain and make access much easier.

This fortified space is made up of three enclosures, each at different heights:

  • La Torreta. This is the oldest and highest part of the castle. It dates back to the 13th century.
  • Intermediate area, dated to the 16th century. This section houses the parade ground, the Queen’s bastion, the Philip II Hall and the Guardhouse.
  • Lower part, from the 18th century. The Revellín del Bon Repós can be found in this area.

The legend of impossible love

Since time immemorial, it has been said that the face of a Moor can be seen at the foot of the mountain on which the castle stands. Its presence is linked to a story of impossible love, at the centre of which lies the beautiful Cántara.

This young Muslim woman was sought after by two men. Almanzor, the great general of the Muslim conquest, rivalled the handsome Alí, who also had a great heart.

As her father could not decide whom to grant her hand, he asked them to perform a great feat. The most impressive man would be awarded his daughter’s hand in marriage. Almanzor set off for India to bring back silks and spices, while Alí decided to build an irrigation channel and took advantage of his proximity to Cántara to make her fall in love. When the general returned, loaded with treasures, the girl’s father was incredibly impressed.

Shaken by what had happened, Alí threw himself off a cliff. And, upon hearing of his fate, Cántara did the same from the San Julián mountains. Her father died of a broken heart upon hearing the news and his face remained reflected at the foot of his castle forever more.
